Keeping your gear safe

How players lose weapons and gear to strangers in Star Citizen, and what you can do to keep yours.
In Star Citizen, what you carry is real. Your armour, your weapons and what is in your backpack go where you go, and other players can take them. Most gear is not lost to bad luck but to a few common situations, and knowing them is most of keeping your kit.
What you can lose
What you have stored in your backpack/armor and quick slots. When you die, it stays on your body. Anyone who reaches your body can take it, and you come back without it. You only keep everything when dying inside a safe zone.
Your weapon. Players can use an exploit to make you drop your weapon, once it's gone, it's gone for good.
What you leave in a ship. Insurance gives you back the ship, not what was in it. Cargo, and anything left on board, goes with the ship.
What you hand over. The game has no safe way to trade: whatever you give first, you have given.
Before you go out
Take only what you can afford to lose.
Storage stays where you left it: what is in one station’s storage is not in another’s.
Your ship
Make sure to have your ports locked before you leave your ship. Make sure to close the doors/ramps behind you.
Before you take off, walk through the ship: someone may have come aboard while the ramp was down.
Do not leave gear on a seat or the floor. Put it away, or take it with you.
Out in the verse
Stations and landing zones are armistice zones, where nobody can fire a weapon. Outside them, anyone can.
Places where players fight over loot draw players who hunt for it. Go with people you trust, or with gear you do not mind losing.
If someone you do not know asks to come aboard, ride along, or “help”, you can say no.
If you die, go back for your body quickly, and bring company: whoever killed you may be waiting by it.
Trading with other players
Trade with people you know: members, or players someone in the org can vouch for.
With a stranger, trade small and in steps, so neither of you risks much at once.
Do not drop your gear for someone you do not know, whether to “show” it, “check” it or “swap” it.
Meet where nobody can fire a weapon.
Outside the game
Nobody from OFFTC, our bot or Cloud Imperium will ever ask for your password. Never give it, or a two-step code, to anyone.
Turn on two-step authentication for your RSI account.
Free ships, giveaways and “support” that ask you to sign in somewhere are scams. Sign in only on robertsspaceindustries.com.
Buying or selling game items for real money breaks our Terms and the game’s own rules, and it is where most scams happen.
If it happens
Tell an admin in the Discord. If someone used a bug or an exploit, report it to Cloud Imperium through the Issue Council or a support request, as our Terms ask.
Whatever happened, our Code holds: we do not fire first, and we do not take from the defenseless.
